Connecting Sunday’s faith with Monday’s work

Work. When you hear the word (whether you are a full-time parent ór in a corporate setting), how does it make you feel? Uneasy? Tired? Maybe even ill? (No, that’s not a stretch: Research shows that heart attacks occur most often on Monday mornings, and least on Saturdays and during summer vacations in July.)1 Why is this activity that consumes most of our waking hours—where we define ourselves and live out our identities—so stressful? What does it mean for us as a culture when our work can be hazardous to our well-being?

The 2011 book “You Lost Me” touched on the tension Christian Millennials feel between their faith and their work, especially as they seek careers in mainstream arenas of society. In the years since, that tension has only intensified. We believe the Church has a huge opportunity— a responsibility even, given the profile of the emerging generation—to incorporate deliberate thinking about work into its discipleship and evangelism efforts. Our culture is already amid a complete revision of the ways we work—an amazing moment when, thanks to technological advancements, workers are both fearing for their jobs and facing unprecedented new opportunities to create the career of their dreams. Add in the lifestyle changes induced by the pandemic and you will see an increase in the diversity of work environment challenges and therefore an increasing need for a sense of purpose and direction. The “why” in our work will always precede the “how” we work in importance.

The time is ripe for a new imagination, new definitions, and a new theology of work

In our upcoming series “Work is Worship” we will align our work with our worship. As a start…take in consideration the ancient wisdom of a man who wrestled with this very same issue:

'What do workers gain from their toil? I have seen the burden God has laid on the human race. He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end. I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live. '

Ecclesiastes 3:9-12 NIV

There is most definitely a strong correlation between what you do every day and the God who gives you every one of your days. Let’s live lives that find its value in a bigger purpose to live for. Let’s discover together how we can be his presence in every workplace!

New series | Work is Worship

We sometimes dislocate Sunday’s faith with Monday’s work. Our purpose to Be His Presence In Every Place integrates these realities with one another. Whether you are retired, a stay-at-home parent, CE0, sole operator or a volunteer somewhere: Your work matters. In this journey we will discover how to make the most of our work-life as we see it as a way to worship.

'For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.' Ephesians 2:10 NIV

This Sunday service will be live-streamed only. You can watch live stream via YouTube and Facebook.
